Sassotondo
Sassotondo is a producer based in the Tuscan Maremma, situated in the tuff-rich area between Sorano, Pitigliano and Sovana, amidst a landscape of plateaus carved by watercourses and shaped by the volcanic bedrock of the Bolsena basin. Here, tuff is not merely a geological feature, but the key to understanding the territory: it outcrops in the soil, defines the natural environment and contributes to a distinct, mineral and deeply local character in the wines.
The vineyards fall within the Bianco di Pitigliano, Sovana and Maremma Toscana appellations. The production focuses primarily on grape varieties that best reflect this southern part of Tuscany, with Ciliegiolo taking centre stage; it is considered a historic Maremma variety and is also selected from the estate’s old vines. Alongside it are Sangiovese and other red grape varieties, as well as Trebbiano, Greco and Sauvignon for the white grapes, all vinified with a focus on territorial authenticity.
The estate has been certified organic since 1994, and biodynamic methods have been practised in the vineyards since 2007. The production approach aims to preserve the character of the raw material and the natural vigour of the environment, without imposing any stylistic constraints. Sassotondo’s wines are distinguished by a combination of finesse, natural concentration, savouriness and spiciness, with an elegant profile that reflects the powerful, essential and recognisable character of the tuff-based Maremma.
