Notaresco is situated in the hilly landscape of the Teramo Hills, between the influence of the Adriatic Sea and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga mountain ranges. The vineyards stretch across undulating terrain that is well exposed and naturally ventilated, where sea breezes and those from the hinterland promote the health of the grapes and ensure balanced ripening. The soils, generally well-drained and capable of preventing waterlogging, help to produce wines with good structure that are dynamic and distinctive.
The flagship grape variety is Montepulciano, the star of the DOC reds and of Cerasuolo, produced using white wine vinification techniques that enhance its freshness, colour and aroma. The local vineyards and wineries also cultivate Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Pecorino, Passerina and Cococciola, varieties that broaden the region’s oenological repertoire. The traditional Abruzzese pergola training system coexists with espalier training and modern canopy management systems, chosen to support ripening and preserve the wines’ aromatic integrity.
Winemaking alternates between immediate, fragrant styles and more structured versions, with extended ageing and time spent in oak for wines intended to develop over time. The presence of family-run estates and a deep-rooted agricultural culture keeps alive a winemaking heritage linked to the hills, conviviality and the celebration of local grapes.
