The Conca Peligna is an intermontane basin in the inland region of Abruzzo, nestled between the slopes of the Maiella and the foothills of the Velino-Sirente. The wine-growing landscape extends around Sulmona and into the municipalities of the valley, on ancient fluvial-alluvial terraces and generally loose, well-drained alluvial deposits with limited water retention. The presence of limestone and silica components, together with the varying exposures, contributes to a marked variety of characteristics among vineyards, even those situated relatively close to one another.
The temperate climate, with cold winters, sunny summers and a significant temperature range between day and night, favours gradual ripening, good acidity retention and the development of distinct aromas. The constant breeze, accentuated by the mountainous topography of the valley, also helps to maintain a balanced microclimate for the grapes and preserve their integrity during the ripening phase.
The area’s signature grape variety is Montepulciano, the star of the Terre dei Peligni sub-zone, capable of producing red wines with intense colour, solid structure, pronounced tannins and aromas ranging from cherry and blackberry to spicy, balsamic and tobacco notes as the wine ages. Alongside it are Trebbiano, Malvasia and other varieties traditionally grown in the inland areas of L’Aquila, used for white wines and fresher, more fragrant styles. Local tradition also includes rosé wines and winemaking methods designed to highlight the fruitiness and liveliness of the wines.
The vineyards are cultivated using a mix of row-planting and, in the oldest vineyards, the Abruzzo pergola system. In the cellar, traditional red wine-making methods, ageing in wood and practices focused on aromatic precision coexist, always respecting the terroir’s identity. The history of viticulture in the Peligna Valley dates back to Roman times and is documented in the writings of Ovid, Andrea Bacci and Michele Torcia, confirming the deep bond between the valley, the vine and the culture of wine.
