Capestrano is situated in the Alto Tirino area, within an inland wine-growing landscape dominated by the Ofena plain, the Apennine mountains and the headwaters of the River Tirino. The vineyards, situated at an altitude of around 450 metres, benefit from a sunny, dry climate with marked temperature variations between day and night: conditions that help preserve the acidity and ensure the precise aromatic ripening of the grapes.
The pebbly and sandy soils, enriched by river and debris deposits from the valley, help to produce wines with pronounced minerality, a savoury texture and a crisp profile.
Local tradition places particular emphasis on native grape varieties: Montepulciano, Pecorino and Trebbiano are the area’s main expressions. Montepulciano has a distinct identity within the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Alto Tirino DOC, reserved for the hillside and plateau vineyards of Capestrano and neighbouring municipalities; Pecorino and Trebbiano, on the other hand, give rise to crisp, fragrant and savoury white wines.
Careful vineyard management, harvesting at the peak of ripeness and winemaking techniques that respect the varietal character enhance the balance between freshness, aromatic intensity and the Mediterranean character of the highlands.
