Naturno embodies one of the most distinctive aspects of winegrowing in the Val Venosta, thanks to an alpine landscape characterised by sun-drenched slopes, breezy hillsides and vineyards situated even at high altitudes. The climate, sheltered by the mountains and characterised by warm days, cool nights and a significant daily temperature range, favours slow ripening and a distinct aromatic profile, whilst preserving the wines’ freshness and vigour.
The geology plays a decisive role in shaping the character of the terroir: the slopes are dominated by rocky substrates and poor soils, with components including slate, quartz and mica, which promote drainage and mineral depth. This environment provides particularly suitable conditions for Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir, grape varieties also recognised by the additional geographical unit of Naturnser. Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer are also grown here, showcasing the region’s aptitude for intense, crisp and fragrant white wines.
Naturno’s Rieslings are distinguished by their finesse, tension and expressiveness, whilst the Pinot Blancs develop balance and precision. Pinot Noir interprets the cool climate with elegance, a delicate texture and good verticality. The local winemaking tradition, upheld by a network of small-scale growers and wineries, is being revitalised through meticulous care of the vineyards and winemaking techniques that preserve the terroir’s Alpine character.
