Montecchio Emilia lies at the junction between the Reggio Emilia plain and the foothills of the Apennines, along the River Enza, a key feature of the landscape and environment of the Val d’Enza. The terrain has a marked alluvial character, with gravelly and silty sediments deposited by the river, alongside the more mature soils of the foothills. This diversity fosters a varied approach to viticulture, capable of combining freshness, balance and good aromatic expression.
The climate, characterised by the continental influence typical of Emilia, benefits from the proximity of the Apennines and from breezes that support the ripening of the grapes, preserving their acidity and fruity profile. The local tradition is linked above all to Lambrusco, in the form of Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Montericco and other Reggio Emilia biotypes, vinified as red, rosé and in semi-sparkling or sparkling versions. Alongside the red grape varieties, the region is home to Spergola, aromatic Malvasia di Candia, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot, as well as Marzemino, Malbo Gentile and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Montecchio falls within the Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa appellation, which showcases a wide range of wines, from aromatic and savoury whites to young, structured reds. The secondary fermentation, traditionally used to develop Lambrusco’s liveliness, and the continuity of family farming practices reflect a winemaking heritage deeply rooted in Reggio Emilia’s rural culture.
