The Cinque Terre wine-growing region stretches along the steep slopes of the La Spezia coastline, between Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Here, the vineyards form a vertical landscape, shaped over the centuries by terraces supported by dry-stone walls, where the vineyards follow the contours of the mountainside and overlook the Ligurian Sea. The climate is mild and sunny, with the combined effect of the sea breeze, sunny exposures and air currents that promote the health of the grapes and balanced ripening. The soils, composed of sandstone, clay and stratified marl, are often loose, well-drained and rich in mineral content – conditions that enhance freshness and flavour.
The grape varieties grown here centre on Bosco, Albarola and Vermentino, predominantly cultivated using traditional low pergolas. Manual harvesting and meticulous work amongst the terraced plots are an integral part of the local identity. The Cinque Terre DOC offers dry white wines with a maritime character, fragrant and persistent, whilst the Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà is produced from dried grapes and is distinguished by its aromatic intensity, sweetness and ageing potential. Viticulture, handed down through the generations, maintains a precious balance between the environment, technique and rural culture.
