Sestri Levante is home to a wine-growing tradition that is intimately linked to the coastal landscape of the Gulf of Tigullio, where the peninsula, the inland hills and the Gromolo and Petronio valleys create a mosaic of aspect and microclimates. The Mediterranean climate, tempered by the sea and enhanced by the breeze, ensures the grapes ripen evenly, preserving their freshness and aromatic character.
The geology of the area is varied: the alluvial plain is flanked by slopes and promontories formed from sandstone, claystone, jasper and rocks of magmatic and metamorphic origin. This diversity contributes to the wines’ mineral and savoury character, particularly in the hillside plots, which are often nestled amongst Mediterranean scrub, olive groves and ancient terraced fields.
Among the most representative grapes are Bianchetta Genovese, Vermentino and Ciliegiolo, varieties capable of expressing both the maritime brightness and the hilly character of the area. The Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino appellation showcases fragrant whites, rosés, reds and sparkling wines, whilst the territorial designations broaden the range of expressive possibilities. Winemaking generally focuses on gentle extraction, temperature control and the preservation of the varietal character. The result is a range of Mediterranean wines – light, agile and savoury – well-suited to Ligurian cuisine and the seafaring tradition of Sestri Levante.
