Finale Ligure boasts a wine-growing landscape nestled between the Ligurian Sea and the limestone highlands of the hinterland, where the vineyards are set amongst terraced slopes, dry stone walls and Mediterranean scrub. The climate is mild and sunny, with sea breezes promoting good air circulation, healthy grapes and a gradual development of aromas. The geology is characterised by ‘Pietra di Finale’, a white-pink limestone of marine origin that is porous and rich in fossils, locally flanked by schistose substrates: a mosaic capable of imparting tension, savouriness and vigour to the wines.
The winemaking tradition of Finale places particular emphasis on Vermentino, Pigato and Rossese, recognised by the Riviera Ligure di Ponente appellation under the geographical sub-zone of Finale or Finalese. Alongside these grape varieties, Lumassina—known locally as Mataòssu in the Manie and the Pora valley—is also cultivated, produced in both still and sparkling versions. The whites display freshness, aromas of light-coloured fruit and Mediterranean herbs, and a distinct maritime character; the reds stand out for their finesse and liveliness. Viticulture preserves ancient practices: cultivation on terraces, manual maintenance of the low stone walls, attention to sun exposure, and winemaking methods that respect the grapes’ identity. The result is a diverse range of local wines, linked to the biodiversity and rural history of the Finalese area.
