Valgella is the largest and most diverse of the five historic sub-zones of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG, in the heart of the Media Valtellina. The area is situated on a large terraced promontory that follows the contours of a rocky spur, with vineyards generally situated at altitudes of between 350 and 650 metres. The favourable exposure of the Rhaetian slope, the protection of the Alps, the valley breezes and the influence of nearby Lake Como combine to create bright and breezy conditions, with lower rainfall than in other parts of Valtellina.
The soils, which are generally deeper, vary according to altitude and the topography of the different micro-territories, offering the vines varying levels of nutrient reserves and drainage. The landscape is characterised by dry stone walls, terraces and manual labour, reflecting a tradition of mountain viticulture built up over time with care and perseverance.
The star grape variety is Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo, alongside the traditional varieties Pignola, Rossola and Brugnola. These grapes produce Valtellina red wines with an elegant structure, characterised by freshness, aromatic finesse and the potential for ageing. The Valgella sub-zone is particularly well-suited to Valtellina Superiore, produced through meticulous winemaking, carefully controlled ageing and a strong emphasis on the identity of the individual vineyards.
