Rovescala is situated on a hillside at the eastern end of the Oltrepò Pavese region, in the valley of the Bardonezza stream, close to the border with Piacenza. The vineyard-covered landscape stretches across hills exposed to breezes and characterised by a continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters and significant temperature variations between day and night. The soils, particularly in the most suitable areas, have a marked clay component, which supports the vines during the dry season and promotes wines with structure, intensity and length.
The local winemaking history is closely linked to Croatina, which has been cultivated in the area for centuries and is the star of the red wines that have made Rovescala one of the cradles of Bonarda dell’Oltrepò Pavese. Alongside this grape variety, Barbera, Uva Rara, Vespolina, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Moscato are also grown, reflecting a diverse range of grape varieties. The wines include still and sparkling reds, often fragrant with dark fruits, spices and flowers, as well as fresh whites and sparkling wines, some of which are made from Pinot Noir. The vineyards are managed using training systems such as Guyot and spurred cordon, alongside grass cover practices and winemaking methods designed to preserve fruit character, balance and a distinct sense of place. The traditions of the vineyard remain an integral part of Rovescala’s identity, which is also celebrated through events dedicated to its wines.
