Faro is a historic hilly wine-growing area in the municipality of Messina, overlooking the Strait and situated between the influences of the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts. The landscape alternates between slopes, valleys and natural terraces, with vineyards exposed to coastal breezes and frequent ventilation, which promotes the health of the grapes and balanced ripening. The soils, which vary from area to area, contain calcareous and sandy components that help define the character of the wines.
The Faro appellation, recognised in 1976, celebrates a grape variety heritage deeply rooted in the traditions of Messina. Nerello Mascalese forms the basis of the blend, alongside Nerello Cappuccio and Nocera; Nero d’Avola, Gaglioppo and Sangiovese may also be included. The winemaking process involves the production of a dry red wine, followed by a minimum period of ageing before bottling. In the glass, it displays moderate structure, a tannic texture, balance and length, with aromas of ripe red fruit, hints of spice and ethereal nuances that develop with age. The long history of local viticulture, documented as far back as the Greek era, completes the identity of a region where the maritime climate, breezes and indigenous grape varieties combine to create a distinctive style.
