Bolgheri stretches along the Tyrrhenian coast, in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, within a natural amphitheatre nestled between the Metalliferous Hills and the sea. The vineyards are mainly situated on the foothills and the plain, at varying altitudes and under the constant influence of sea breezes, which moderate temperatures, promote a wide daily temperature range and keep the environment well ventilated. The intense sunlight, combined with the water supply from the deep soils, ensures regular and complete ripening.
The geological profile is particularly varied: its marine and alluvial origins have produced a remarkable variety of soils, ranging from sandy to sandy-loam-clay, and from clay to clay-silt, often rich in gravel and fossil fragments. This diversity guides planting decisions and promotes a viticultural approach that focuses on the subdivision of plots.
Red wines represent the region’s most recognisable expression and are primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with possible additions of Syrah and Sangiovese. They are characterised by ripe fruit, a silky tannic structure, freshness and Mediterranean balsamic notes. Bolgheri Rosso focuses on balance and drinkability, whilst the Superiore undergoes longer ageing, including in oak. The grape variety portfolio also includes Vermentino, Sauvignon and Viognier, which feature in savoury, fragrant and bright white wines.
