Calliano occupies a prominent position at the northern entrance to the Vallagarina, in a valley basin planted with vines and framed by Castel Beseno, the course of the Rio Cavallo and the hills flanking the valley. The landscape alternates between the valley floor, alluvial fans, floodplain terraces and well-exposed slopes, creating conditions favourable to a diverse form of viticulture. The climate benefits from Alpine protection and the air currents flowing up the Adige valley, with bright days and a significant daily temperature range that helps preserve the freshness and aromas of the grapes.
The area’s signature grape variety is Marzemino, which produces elegant, fragrant and complex red wines that express a distinctive terroir. Alongside it are Yellow Muscat, Lagrein, Merlot, Cabernet and white varieties such as Chardonnay, Nosiola, Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer, used to produce still wines, rosés, aromatic wines and sparkling wines. Local wines are primarily classified under the Trentino DOC appellation – including the ‘Superiore’ sub-categories – and the Vallagarina IGT.
Calliano’s winemaking tradition combines manual care of the vineyard, careful selection of the grapes and winemaking techniques that may include ageing in small wooden casks. The result is a diverse range of wines, underpinned by the connection between the fortified landscape, rural heritage and wine culture.
