Nestled on the western edge of the Vittoria Plain and opening out towards the Dirillo river, Acate boasts a luminous wine-growing landscape, shaped by the meeting of the Iblean plateau and the Mediterranean breezes. The hot, dry climate, with mild winters, limited summer rainfall and significant temperature variations between day and night, ensures balanced ripening and helps preserve the wine’s aromatic freshness.
The area features a remarkable variety of soils: sandy soils, porous and crumbly calcareous tuff substrates, as well as medium-textured soils with a clay component. This diversity of soil types helps to define distinct profiles, ranging from fragrant finesse to greater structure, whilst maintaining the area’s recognisable Mediterranean character. The vines are mainly trained using the espalier or alberello methods, with pruning carefully managed to control vigour and harvests timed according to the grapes’ degree of ripeness.
Nero d’Avola and Frappato lie at the heart of the local tradition and, together, produce reds with brilliant colour, crisp fruit, floral notes and a harmonious tannic structure. Alongside these wines are those made from Insolia and other authorised varieties, which highlight the freshness, savouriness and distinct character of the various vineyards. The culture of viticulture, deeply rooted in the area’s agricultural history, continues today through wines that respect the terroir and its sub-regions.
