Pitigliano is situated in the heart of the south-eastern Grosseto Maremma, in a hilly landscape characterised by plateaus and deep gorges carved into the rock. The most distinctive feature of the area is the presence of tuff, of volcanic origin, alongside effusive and volcaniclastic formations, as well as marly, sandy and stony soils. The soils are generally deep, well-drained, sub-acidic or neutral, and naturally predisposed to moderate dryness, favouring the balanced development of the vines and the gradual ripening of the grapes.
The Mediterranean climate, with mild temperatures, dry summers, good sunshine and constant ventilation, benefits from sea breezes and northerly winds. The temperature variations between day and night help to preserve freshness and aromatic definition, whilst the hillside altitude and favourable exposures complete the terroir profile.
The local winemaking tradition is ancient and has been documented since Etruscan times. The cellars carved into the tuff bear witness to a deeply rooted winemaking culture, now complemented by modern practices of vine canopy management, yield control and targeted winemaking. The grape varieties grown include Trebbiano Toscano, Greco, Grechetto, Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Verdello and Ansonica, alongside Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Viognier for the whites; Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Aleatico, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, on the other hand, characterise the area’s red wines, which are produced under the Bianco di Pitigliano and Sovana appellations.
