Chambave occupies a wine-growing area in the middle to lower Aosta Valley, along the sunniest south-facing slopes and in the hilly terrain between Chambave, Châtillon, Saint-Vincent, Saint-Denis and Verrayes. Viticulture takes place in a mountainous environment characterised by steep slopes, with terraced and fragmented plots, often facing south, south-east or south-west. The area’s relatively dry climate, favoured by the protection of the mountains and the effect of the vineyard exposures, contributes to the even ripening of the grapes and good aromatic concentration. The soils are primarily characterised by ancient glacial deposits and Pleistocene gravitational processes, featuring detrital material and a texture that promotes drainage and deep root growth.
The ampelographic heritage centres on distinctive Alpine varieties. Petit Rouge forms the basis of the red wines of the Chambave appellation, alongside other authorised grape varieties, whilst White Muscat characterises a range of aromatic wines, produced in both dry and passito styles, depending on the grape-drying methods used. Alongside these key varieties, there is also room for Fumin, Cornalin, Vien de Nus, Pinot Noir, Gamay and other traditional grape varieties. The manual care of the vineyards, cultivation on terraced slopes and winemaking that respects the varietal identity reflect a deeply rooted and still vibrant winemaking tradition.
