San Martino in Pensilis perfectly embodies the wine-growing landscape of Lower Molise: a hilly area overlooking the Adriatic, on the right bank of the Biferno, where the proximity of the sea interacts with the breezes and a level of sunlight particularly conducive to the ripening of the grapes. The vineyards are planted on sandy-clay soils, ranging from non-calcareous to calcareous, which are generally well-drained and capable of supporting balanced viticulture.
The range of grape varieties includes those permitted by the regional appellations, with a significant presence of Montepulciano and Aglianico amongst the reds, Trebbiano Toscano amongst the whites, and Tintilia – Molise’s signature grape variety – which is particularly representative of the Sammartino hills. This yields structured and harmonious red wines, fragrant rosés and whites with good freshness – distinct expressions yet all sharing a clear Mediterranean character.
Traditional training systems – in rows and on trellises – combined with careful pruning and control of crop yield, promote gradual and complete ripening. The winemaking process enhances both the fruity character of the young grapes and the development of the reds through maceration and ageing. The long local agricultural history, documented as far back as Roman times, completes the identity of a region where vineyards, landscape and tradition coexist naturally.
