The Upper Aosta Valley stretches along the upper reaches of the Dora Baltea, between the Aosta and Arvier areas and the Valdigne, as far as the vineyards of Morgex and La Salle at the foot of Mont Blanc. It is an alpine wine-growing landscape characterised by steep slopes, sun-drenched terraces and valleys shaped by glacial action. The soils consist of a mosaic of crystalline substrates, moraine deposits, debris cones and fluvioglacial materials; they are often well-drained and rich in minerals, lending the wines vigour, precision and a distinctive mountainous character.
The climate is dry and sunny, with low rainfall, frequent breezes and significant temperature variations between day and night. The sunshine promotes the ripening of the grapes, whilst night-time temperatures preserve acidity and aromas. As one ascends towards Morgex and La Salle, the altitude lends the viticulture a distinctive character: here, Prié Blanc, a native white grape variety, grows at high altitudes and produces refined, taut and delicately aromatic wines, as well as sparkling wines made using the classic method.
In the Arvier area, the warm, dry exposure of the vineyard-lined amphitheatre particularly brings out the best in Petit Rouge, alongside traditional varieties such as Vien de Nus, Neyret, Dolcetto, Pinot Noir and Gamay. This yields Alpine reds with a fragrant profile, an elegant structure and a pleasant spicy note. There is also no shortage of Chardonnay, Petite Arvine, Pinot Grigio and other varieties authorised by the Valle d’Aosta DOC, capable of producing fresh, savoury and crisp white wines.
Viticulture retains a strong link with manual labour and the history of the region. The vineyards are often laid out on terraces supported by dry stone walls, with low pergola training in the higher areas and Guyot training on the slopes suited to red grape production. Hand-harvesting, careful selection of the bunches and winemaking methods that respect the varietal identity complete a production model in which altitude, aspect and tradition define wines that are authentically from the Aosta Valley.
